New team, same mission

Our Story

In early 2024, two friends set out to understand why the United States has so many coffee roasters, yet so few coffee growers. What started as a simple (and somewhat silly) question quickly became a deep dive into the challenges of growing coffee, especially in controlled environment agriculture. That shared curiosity led to the formation of Hearth & Harvest Coffee Company LLC.

In 2025, our second co-founder passed away, and things slowed down for a while.

In 2026, we returned with a renewed focus and a new identity: Working Theory LLC. Today, our team brings together diverse backgrounds in design, systems engineering, award-winning academic research, agricultural commerce, and production strategy. We use that experience to develop novel automation technologies, quality systems, and practical growing solutions for both controlled environment agriculture and traditional farms.

As a team, we understand that innovations to the quality of specialty crops have rippling affects across global supply chains, which is why one of our primary goals is to develop scalable systems that be tailored to fit the needs of traditional farms.

Based in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Working Theory LLC is building toward becoming a major specialty crop producer in the DMV area. Our work is based on moving fast, testing everything, taking good notes, and the belief that better tasting crops can be grown anywhere, especially here in the United States.
